Alternative High School:

Provides educational opportunities for adult residents of Geary County.  The division seeks to meet the educational needs and desires of county residents to the maximum extent possible.

Facilities and Maintenance:

Provides care and maintenance for all schools in Geary County, including Fort Riley.  Responsible for school district’s warehouse and full and part-time custodial personnel.

Instructional Materials Center (IMC):

Makes available to teachers a wide range of materials designed to meet students’ special needs.  An IMC instructor serves as a consultant and provides professional skills in locating the proper materials for a specific problem and in developing programs for specific students. 

Library Media Services:

Each building’s library media center contains a well rounded collection of fiction and nonfiction books.  The centers also provide a wealth of audiovisual material to support the classroom curriculum.  The collections also contain computer programs, models, and multi-media kits.  Several of the library media centers are kept open for a six-week period during the summer to encourage independent reading.

Psychological Services:

Provides assessment, consultation, and intervention strategies for students in the schools; a psychologist serves as a member of the staffing team for students who have been referred for an evaluation.

Remedial Instruction:

Provides remedial tutoring in reading and math to identified students who have scored below their grade level after a screening test.  Programs attempt to meet the special educational needs for a limited number of elementary children.

School Food Service:

Provides a low-cost school lunch/breakfast program based on the nutritional needs of children attending public schools.  Every school in the district offers a student lunch and breakfast program.  Four schools prepare meals, while thirteen contain satellite kitchens and receive meals prepared in one of the other four schools.  Food is bought, cooked, and served by the food service staff of the public school district.  The Kansas State Board of Health and the Kansas State Department of Education are the monitoring organizations.  Special arrangements can be made to help students from low-income families finance their school lunch and breakfast. 

School Health Services:

The School Nurse program provides generalized school nursing services for students attending public schools in Geary County.  Services include:  annual vision and hearing screenings for every student; health file and immunization record maintenance.  Emphasis is placed on health education, early case finding, disease prevention, and control of communicable diseases by informing parents of their children’s health problems.  The school district employs seven nurses.  Each school is assigned to a nurse for service.

School Transportation:

Coordinates bus and van transportation for the following categories of students:

1.      All public school students attending Junction City schools who reside outside the city limits (includes Fort Riley students attending Junction City Senior High School).

2.      Non-public school students who reside on routes scheduled to transport students listed above.

3.      Special education students by arrangement. 

Social Workers:

Social workers are available through the school district to help identify and resolve those social and emotional difficulties which interfere with children’s attendance, adjustment, and achievement in school.  Social workers act as a liaison between school, home and community agencies.  Services are offered to a child and his/her family when a problem interferes with the pupil’s ability to adjust to a school environment; focus is upon the child receiving education offered by the public schools. 

Special Education Services Division:

Provides evaluation and special classes, programs, materials, and educational services for children identified as having exceptional educational needs in the following areas:

1.      Early Childhood Special Education.

2.      Behavior disorders.

Mission:  The Red Cross cooperates closely with the military by carrying out activities which supplement and assist the military in its programs relating to health, welfare, and service member morale.

LIST OF SERVICES:

Communication:  The Red Cross assists in relaying verified information on emergency situations, home condition reports, and health and welfare reports on the immediate family of both the service member and his/her spouse.  This enables the military and the service member to make informed leave decisions.

Counseling:  Counseling services are offered to service members and their families on personal and family problems, procedures for Hardship Discharge, Compassionate Reassignment, marital problems, government benefits, and financial and similar problems. 

Financial Assistance:  The Red Cross extends financial aid in the form of loans and grants to those who have a verified need in emergency situations (emergency or convalescent leave, personal needs, family assistance, etc.).  When unable to assist, the Red Cross does recommend appropriate service agencies as referrals.

Training:   CPR, First Aid, Water Safety, and Back Injury.

Description:  A temporary shelter for stray cats and dogs where they are housed and fed for five days before being placed for adoption.  Center will try to notify ownders if pet has proper identification (pet license).  To adopt a pet, one must pay an adoption fee and neuter surgery deposit.  Owners are charged an impound fine and per-day charge by the city.  City licenses and rabies vaccinations are required for animals over six months of age.

Income Maintenance (IM):
Administers public assistance programs, including Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), General Assistance (GA), Refugee Assistance, Food Stamps, and Medical Assistance.  Eligibility is determined through an application process, and is based upon household income levels, available assets, and the number of household members.

Employment Preparation Services (EPS):

Provides educational, vocational, and employment counseling, as well as funding assistance, to Income Maintenance clients.  Programs administered include KanWork, JOBS, MOST, CWEP, and Life Skills Workshop.  Applicants must be referred to EPS by their Income Maintenance caseworker, with eligibility for EPS subsequently determined through an assessment process.

Child Care Assistance (part of EPS):
Provides child care funding assistance for Income Maintenance clients and other low-income individuals, who are either employed or participating in an approved educational or vocational program.  Eligibility is determined through an application process, or as part of the EPS application process, and is based upon household income levels and the number of household members.

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR):

Provides vocational rehabilitation services to individuals with severe physical and/or mental disabilities that significantly limit their opportunities to obtain and/or maintain employment.  Eligibility is determined through medical and vocational assessments, which are provided at no cost to applicants. 

Children and Family Services:

Conducts child abuse and neglect assessments; assists in the preservation of families through the provision of services designed to minimize abuse and neglect of children while improving the parenting skills of caretakers; oversees the needs of minors placed into foster care by the court system; coordinates the adoption of children with special needs; performs court-ordered supervision of juvenile offenders.

Adult Services:
