The Junction City Geary County “Smile Awhile” Preventive Dentistry Services
The Junction City Geary County Health Department is currently providing preventive dentistry services for children from 6 months to 18 years old. These services include fluoride varnish and Diagnodent exam. Fluoride varnish is a safe way to provide fluoride protection to help prevent tooth decay, and the treatment may reverse early cavities by strengthening teeth enamel.
The Diagnodent exam is a high tech dental laser device that painlessly scans the teeth for unseen cavities; and the child receives a referral to the dentist if a cavity is discovered. The health department nurses applied fluoride varnish or administered Diagnodent exams to over 200 children this summer.
Preventive dentistry treatments were provided at Ware, Lincoln, and Custer Hill Elementary Schools, the Back to School Health Fair and the Boys and Girls Club. Over 60 children received referrals for dental services this summer, and the health department nurse offered assistance with appointments and transportation.
The Health Department plans to offer these preventive dental services in the fall at the after school programs. For more information about preventive dentistry, please call the Junction City Geary County Health Department at (785) 762-5788 or The Junction City Youth Clinic at (785) 762-5022.
